Going to the Supermarket – Bilingual English Listening Practice (A1–C2)

¿Acertarás estas preguntas?                                ALL STORIES➡

Luis heads to the supermarket. He picks up some bread, milk, and apples. He grabs a few tomatoes and carrots too. He brings along a bag to put everything in. At the checkout, he pays in cash. Then he heads back home, feeling good because he has everything he needs for his meal.

Luis drops by the supermarket every week. He picks out fresh fruits and veggies for his family. Today, he goes for apples, carrots, and bread. He also checks out the offers and looks over the prices. At the checkout, he pays with his card. Before heading out, he makes sure everything is packed up in his reusable bag.

Luis prefers to get his shopping done early, when the supermarket isn’t too crowded. He walks up and down the aisles, looking for the things on his list. He grabs some whole-grain bread, fresh cheese, and seasonal veggies. He also takes advantage of a discount on pasta. At the checkout, he taps his card to pay. Before heading out, he looks over the receipt to make sure everything’s correct.

Luis plans ahead for his shopping by making a list so he doesn’t end up buying things on impulse. When he gets to the supermarket, he looks at prices and checks out the labels to pick out quality stuff. He goes for artisanal bread, aged cheese, and organic tomatoes. At the checkout, he uses his loyalty card to get a deal. As he heads toward the exit, he thinks about how marketing tricks mess with what people buy.

Luis takes his time with grocery shopping these days. He goes over the labels carefully, looking out for natural ingredients and steering clear of anything with too many additives. At the bakery, he picks up a sourdough bread the baker told him about. Over in the fruit section, he goes for whatever’s in season. While checking out, he chats with the cashier about how important it is to shop responsibly. As he heads out, he feels good about making smarter choices.

Luis looks at shopping from a sustainability angle. He thinks about where products come from, and he goes for fair trade and local stuff whenever he can. He also pays attention to how things are packaged and tries to stick with plastic-free options. At the bakery, he chats with the baker about how slow fermentation pays off when it comes to making good bread. As he heads out, he wonders about how the way people shop could end up changing the global economy over time.

SPEAKING PRACTICE –  PHOTO COMPARISON – Model answers (A1–C2)

A1

In the first picture, a man is in a supermarket.
In the second picture, a man is at a market.
Both are buying food.
The supermarket is inside.
The market is outside.
I like the market.

A2

In the first photo, the man is pushing a trolley in a supermarket.
In the second, the person is buying vegetables at a market stall.
Both places have fruit and vegetables.
The supermarket is bright and clean.
The market is outside with tents.
I think the market is more fun.

B1

The first picture shows a man shopping in a supermarket, pushing a trolley between the shelves.
The second picture shows someone choosing fruit at an open-air market.
Both people are shopping for food, but in very different places.
The supermarket is probably quieter and more organized, while the market seems busier and more colorful.
Personally, I would enjoy shopping at the market because it's more lively.

B2

In both images, we see people shopping for groceries, but the settings are quite different.
In the supermarket, the atmosphere appears calm and structured.
The shopper is alone and there’s artificial lighting and long aisles.
In contrast, the market looks lively and colorful, with several people walking and talking.
The natural light and open space give it a more relaxed, informal feel.
I prefer outdoor markets because I enjoy interacting with vendors and choosing fresh produce.

C1

The two images depict different shopping environments.
The first shows a man inside a well-lit, organized supermarket with modern facilities.
He seems to be shopping alone, and the place is spacious and quiet.
The second picture shows a bustling outdoor market, full of colors and people.
The shopper is engaged with a vendor, possibly asking about the produce.
While supermarkets are convenient and structured, markets offer a more personal, sensory-rich experience.
I’d personally prefer the market for its atmosphere and human connection.

C2

These pictures illustrate contrasting approaches to grocery shopping.
The first image presents a solitary figure navigating the sterile aisles of a supermarket — a space defined by order, efficiency, and predictability.
The second image, by contrast, bursts with life: a vibrant market scene, where interaction, spontaneity, and community define the experience.
The supermarket prioritizes convenience, while the market evokes tradition and personal engagement.
Depending on my mood, I might choose the quiet of the former or the energy of the latter, but overall I find markets more enriching.
