At the Market – Bilingual English Listening Practice (A1–C2)

Ana heads to the market with her mom. She picks up some bread, apples, and carrots. She also grabs a few tomatoes and some milk. She walks around the stalls and checks out the fruit. At the checkout, she pays in cash. Then, she heads home with her bag packed full of food.

Ana hits the market with her mom on Saturdays. She walks around the aisles and picks out fresh fruits and veggies. She asks about the prices before buying anything. At the bakery, she grabs some freshly baked bread. Before heading out, she helps her mom carry the bags home. She loves checking out the market.

Ana loves going to the market because she always finds fresh, high-quality stuff. She wanders around the stalls, trying out fruit samples. She chats with the vendors about when it's the best season to buy certain things. At the bakery, she picks up some artisanal bread. Before heading home, she stops by a flower stall and grabs a bouquet for her mom.

This one flows beautifull. Ana's becoming the queen of mindful shopping!🌿🧺
Ana prefers shopping at the market over the supermarket because everything’s fresher and more natural. She loves chatting with farmers about how they grow their produce and learning about where her food comes from. Today, she goes for some organic tomatoes and artisanal cheese. When checking out, she uses her loyalty card to get a deal. Before heading out, she grabs a coffee at a nearby café and goes over her shopping list.

Ana sees the market as a big part of local culture. She’s curious about the vendors’ stories and how fair trade makes a difference in the community. She asks about sustainable production and what sets apart organic from regular farming methods. While picking up some goat cheese and rye bread, she thinks about how the way we shop can shape the local economy and help with long-term sustainability.

Ana's not just shopping. She’s thinking globally while acting locally. 🌍🛒
Ana heads to the market with a curious and thoughtful mindset, looking into trends in responsible shopping. She stops by a stall selling exotic spices and chats with the vendor about how international trade affects the local economy. She thinks about how globalization shapes our eating habits and how it impacts farming. Before heading out, she picks up some seasonal produce, reminding herself how important it is to shop consciously and sustainably.

SPEAKING PRACTICE –  PHOTO COMPARISON – Model answers (A1–C2)

🟢 A1

In picture one, there is a market outside. It’s very colourful. People buy fruit and vegetables. In picture two, people are inside. It’s a supermarket. They also buy fruit and vegetables. I like the market more. It’s nice.

🟡 A2

In the first picture, there’s a market. The people are shopping outside. There are many colours. In the second picture, the people are inside a supermarket. They are also shopping. I think it’s more comfortable in the supermarket. I prefer supermarkets because they’re cleaner.

🟠 B1

Both pictures show people shopping. The first picture is outdoors, probably a street market. The second picture is a supermarket, indoors. In my opinion, the street market is more interesting and lively. However, the supermarket is probably easier and faster to do your shopping.

🔵 B2

Both images depict scenes of people shopping for groceries, yet the settings are quite different. The first image illustrates an open-air market with a wide variety of fresh produce and an informal atmosphere. On the other hand, the second image portrays a typical supermarket aisle, indoors, organised, and clean. Personally, I would rather shop in the outdoor market because it seems more vibrant and appealing.

🟣 C1

These two images illustrate contrasting shopping environments. The outdoor market in the first picture offers a lively, colourful, and informal atmosphere, typically associated with fresh and locally grown products. In contrast, the supermarket in the second image presents a sterile, highly organised, and predictable shopping experience. Although supermarkets may offer convenience, I find the atmosphere of the street market much more engaging.

🔴 C2

The first image depicts a lively farmers' market, characterized by an abundance of fresh produce displayed attractively, fostering an engaging community atmosphere. Conversely, the second image portrays a modern, conventional supermarket setting, showcasing a meticulously organised and structured environment. While acknowledging the practicality and efficiency supermarkets offer, I am personally more drawn to the market scene, as it provides a more immersive and authentic shopping experience, reflecting cultural traditions and promoting local produce.
