Essay – What Is the Key to Student Success?

Task

Prompt: You have watched a class debate on the following question: What is the most important factor in a student's success? Notes: – family support – motivation – quality of teaching Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the factors in your notes. You should explain which factor you think is more important and give reasons to support your opinion. Write 220-260 words in an appropriate style.

Model answer

It is widely believed that several elements contribute to a student’s success, but opinions differ on which factor plays the most decisive role. Among the most frequently mentioned are motivation and quality of teaching. In this essay, I will examine these two aspects and explain why I believe motivation is ultimately more important.

On the one hand, motivation plays a crucial role in a student’s academic journey. A motivated student is more likely to set goals, manage time effectively and persist through difficulties. Even when teaching is average or below expectations, highly motivated students often compensate by seeking extra resources, working independently and maintaining consistent effort. Motivation helps students overcome obstacles and build resilience, which are essential for long-term academic achievement.

On the other hand, the quality of teaching clearly influences a student’s performance. A skilled teacher can spark interest, explain complex concepts clearly and provide valuable feedback. Inspiring teachers can also build confidence and help students develop effective learning strategies. However, while excellent teaching may engage students temporarily, without personal drive and ambition, sustained academic success is difficult to achieve.

All things considered, I believe that motivation is the most important factor in student success. While good teaching creates favourable conditions for learning, it is the student’s own effort and determination that ultimately make the greatest impact. In my view, motivation is the foundation on which all other factors build, and without it, even the best resources or teachers cannot lead to meaningful progress.

Essay – Has Technology Improved Our Lives?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on this question: Does technology improve our lives or make them more complicated? Notes: – communication – work-life balance – access to services Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points in your notes. You should explain which one has the greatest impact and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

There is no doubt that technology plays a central role in modern life, but whether it makes life better or more complicated remains a subject of debate. In this essay, I will discuss its effect on communication and access to services, and explain which I believe has the greatest impact.

One major advantage of technological progress is the way it has revolutionised communication. Thanks to smartphones, instant messaging and video calls, we can stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues regardless of location or time zone. This has strengthened personal relationships and made collaboration in international projects far more efficient. Moreover, technology allows us to express ourselves through different formats—text, voice, video—which can make communication more dynamic and inclusive. However, it can also be argued that constant connectivity increases stress and leads to overexposure, blurring the boundaries between work and private life.

Another area that has clearly benefited from technology is access to essential services. Online banking, virtual healthcare consultations and e-learning platforms have made everyday life far more manageable. This is particularly helpful for people in rural areas or with mobility challenges. Tasks that used to require long queues or travel can now be completed in minutes, increasing convenience and saving valuable time.

All things considered, I believe that access to services is the area where technology has had the most positive and lasting impact. While improved communication is certainly beneficial, the ability to manage vital aspects of our lives more efficiently and independently is what makes modern technology truly indispensable.

Essay – The Effects of Social Media on Society

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on the topic: Do social media platforms do more harm than good? Notes: – misinformation – self-expression – social pressure Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points in your notes. You should explain which has the greatest effect and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

In recent years, social media has transformed the way people communicate and share information. While these platforms offer opportunities for connection and expression, there is increasing concern about the negative consequences they may bring. In this essay, I will focus on the spread of misinformation and social pressure, and explain which I believe is more harmful.

One of the most serious problems associated with social media is the rapid spread of misinformation. False claims, conspiracy theories and manipulated images can circulate widely before being corrected—if they are corrected at all. This can influence public health decisions, undermine trust in democratic institutions, and create fear or hostility within communities. Because social media platforms prioritise engagement, their algorithms often promote content that is sensational rather than accurate, which makes this problem even worse.

Another harmful consequence is the pressure to conform to unrealistic social standards. Many users compare themselves to the idealised lives they see online, which can damage self-esteem and lead to anxiety, particularly among younger people. This pressure to appear successful, attractive or constantly happy has been linked to increased rates of depression and poor mental health.

Although both issues are troubling, I believe misinformation has the most far-reaching impact. While social pressure affects individuals on a personal level, the spread of false information can distort public understanding, influence elections and destabilise society as a whole. Tackling this issue should be a priority for platform designers, educators and governments.

Essay – How Can We Improve Mental Health?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on the following topic: What is the best way to improve people’s mental health? Notes: – therapy – physical exercise – community support Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which one you think is more effective and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Improving mental health is one of the major challenges facing society today. Although awareness has increased, many people still struggle to access effective support. This essay will examine the role of physical exercise and therapy, and explain why I believe regular physical activity is the more sustainable tool for promoting well-being.

Therapy is widely recognised as a valuable form of mental health care. Speaking to a trained professional helps individuals understand and manage anxiety, depression or stress in a personalised way. Therapists can teach techniques such as mindfulness and behavioural strategies, all of which have proven benefits. However, access is often limited by cost or location, and some people remain reluctant to seek help due to stigma.

In contrast, physical exercise is more accessible and backed by scientific research as a mood booster. Regular activity stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin, improving emotional regulation. It also promotes better sleep, enhances self-esteem and provides structure. Group sports or fitness classes further offer social interaction, which reduces isolation and supports overall mental health.

While therapy is essential for many people, I believe physical exercise is more effective in prevention and long-term maintenance. It is affordable, empowering, and can be incorporated into daily routines, making it one of the most practical tools for improving mental well-being on a broad scale and over time.

Essay – Preparing Students for the Future

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on the topic: What should schools focus on to best prepare students for the future? Notes: – job-related skills – creativity – emotional intelligence Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which one is more important and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

As the job market evolves and technology reshapes our world, schools are under pressure to equip students with the right tools for the future. While academic knowledge remains important, modern education must also address a broader range of competencies. This essay will discuss the importance of job-related skills and emotional intelligence in preparing young people for life beyond school.

Job-related skills are essential for employability. Students who learn how to write a CV, use spreadsheets, or manage basic finances are often better prepared for workplace demands. Vocational training, digital literacy and project-based learning help bridge the gap between theory and practical application. However, these technical skills may quickly become outdated due to rapid innovation. What is relevant today may be obsolete tomorrow.

By contrast, emotional intelligence (EI) is more adaptable and long-lasting. It includes the ability to understand and regulate emotions, communicate clearly, resolve conflicts and show empathy. These traits are increasingly valued by employers, especially in roles that involve teamwork, leadership or customer interaction. In addition, emotionally intelligent people tend to be more resilient and mentally stable, which benefits both their personal and professional lives.

Although job-related skills are clearly useful, I believe emotional intelligence is more important in the long term. While technical knowledge requires regular updating, interpersonal and emotional abilities remain relevant in every stage of life, making them a more sustainable investment for modern education systems.

Essay – How Can We Effectively Address Climate Change?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on the topic: What is the best way to tackle climate change? Notes: – government action – changes in individual behaviour – scientific innovation Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which is more effective and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Climate change is one of the most urgent global challenges of our time. While governments, individuals and scientists all play a role in addressing the problem, there is ongoing debate about which approach is the most effective. This essay will examine the impact of government action and individual behaviour, and argue which is more likely to lead to meaningful, large-scale results.

Government intervention is essential when it comes to tackling climate change. Through legislation and long-term policy planning, authorities can enforce environmental regulations, such as carbon taxes, emissions limits and subsidies for renewable energy. They can also invest in clean public transport, reforestation projects and sustainable infrastructure. Without clear policies and financial support, many private initiatives would lack the resources or incentive to develop. However, political pressures and economic interests often delay or weaken bold environmental decisions.

On the other hand, individual choices play an important role in shaping social values. People who reduce their energy consumption, avoid waste and support sustainable businesses help build a culture of environmental responsibility. In some cases, collective public demand has influenced companies and policymakers to adopt greener practices. Nonetheless, these efforts are often limited in scale and cannot compensate for the lack of national or international coordination.

All things considered, I believe government action is more effective than relying on personal choices. While both approaches matter, only governments have the power to implement wide-reaching structural change, from industry regulations to climate agreements, and without such leadership, individual actions will never be enough to reverse the ongoing damage.

Essay – Reducing Gender Inequality in Society

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on the topic: How can we reduce gender inequality in society? Notes: – education – equal pay laws – media representation Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which would have the greatest impact and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Despite progress in recent decades, gender inequality remains a widespread issue in many parts of the world. Reducing this gap requires coordinated efforts in multiple areas. This essay will focus on education and media representation, and argue which one is likely to create the most lasting impact.

Education plays a fundamental role in shaping attitudes and promoting equality from an early age. When boys and girls are given equal opportunities to study and develop their skills, the foundation is set for a more inclusive society. Furthermore, integrating gender-sensitive content into curricula and training teachers to challenge stereotypes can help eliminate unconscious bias. Educated women are more likely to participate in the workforce and decision-making processes, which contributes to economic and social progress.

Media representation also has a powerful influence on how people perceive gender roles. Films, television and advertising often reinforce outdated stereotypes, consciously or not. However, when the media shows women in leadership roles or men in caregiving positions, it helps normalise diversity. Changing how people are portrayed in the media can reshape expectations, especially for younger generations.

Although both strategies are important, I believe education has the greatest long-term effect. Media can influence public opinion, but education provides individuals with the tools to think critically and challenge inequality, making it a more sustainable and transformative solution over time.

Essay – Should Young People Be Encouraged to Volunteer?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on this question: Should volunteering be encouraged among young people? Notes: – personal development – impact on society – academic achievement Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which is more important and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Volunteering is widely considered a valuable experience for young people, but opinions differ as to whether it should be actively encouraged or even made part of formal education. In this essay, I will examine the benefits of volunteering for personal development and its broader impact on society, and explain why I believe the personal gains are ultimately more important.

One of the main benefits of volunteering is the opportunity for personal growth. By engaging in community service, young people develop key soft skills such as communication, empathy and time management. These experiences help them become more confident, adaptable and socially aware. Moreover, volunteering can guide young people in discovering their interests or future career paths, especially during uncertain transitional phases like finishing school.

Volunteering also creates a positive impact on society. Youth involvement supports important causes such as environmental protection, care for the elderly, and poverty reduction. The energy, creativity and commitment of young volunteers can revitalise communities and motivate others to take part. However, the long-term impact often depends on how well such initiatives are organised and whether volunteers feel genuinely involved.

While both aspects are valuable, I believe the greatest benefit of volunteering lies in personal development. A young person who has grown through meaningful experiences is more likely to become a socially responsible adult. Empowering individuals early in life creates long-term change, which ultimately benefits society on a deeper level.

Essay – What Prevents People from Achieving Success?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on this question: What is the biggest challenge people face in achieving success in life? Notes: – lack of opportunities – fear of failure – lack of motivation Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which is the biggest obstacle and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Achieving success is a goal shared by many, but the path towards it is often filled with obstacles. While different individuals may face different barriers, two common challenges are the fear of failure and the lack of opportunities. This essay will explore both and explain which one I believe is the greater obstacle.

Fear of failure is a powerful internal barrier that prevents people from taking risks or trying new things. Many talented individuals hesitate to start a business, change careers, or pursue creative goals simply because they are afraid of making mistakes. This fear often leads to procrastination, low confidence, and missed chances. Even when people have the ability, fear can convince them otherwise.

On the other hand, a lack of opportunities—such as limited access to education, professional networks or financial support—can severely restrict a person’s potential. People in disadvantaged environments may never get the chance to show their talents, regardless of how hard they work. This structural inequality can prevent entire groups from advancing, no matter how motivated or capable they are.

Although both factors matter, I believe the lack of opportunities is a more serious challenge. Fear can often be overcome through support and experience, but systemic barriers require broader social change. Until everyone has access to fair opportunities, success will remain out of reach for many.

Essay – What Makes a Great Leader?

Task

Prompt: You have had a class discussion on this question: What is the most important quality in a good leader? Notes: – intelligence – communication skills – integrity Write an essay for your teacher discussing two of the points. You should explain which is more important and give reasons to support your opinion.

Model answer

Leadership plays a crucial role in any organisation, from schools to businesses to governments. However, opinions differ on which qualities are most essential for effective leadership. This essay will focus on communication skills and integrity, and explain why I believe integrity is ultimately the most important.

Communication is undeniably one of the most valuable tools a leader can possess. Leaders must be able to present their ideas clearly, listen actively, and adjust their language depending on the situation and audience. Strong communication prevents misunderstandings, resolves conflict and motivates teams to work towards shared goals. In addition, it encourages transparency and trust, both of which are necessary for efficient collaboration.

On the other hand, integrity forms the moral foundation of leadership. A leader with integrity is honest, consistent and accountable for their actions. Such leaders gain the respect of others because they lead by example, stick to their values and take responsibility when things go wrong. People are far more likely to follow someone who they believe is fair and trustworthy, even in difficult circumstances.

While communication connects leaders to their teams, integrity connects them to their purpose. A skilled speaker who lacks ethical principles may lead effectively in the short term but will eventually lose credibility. In contrast, a principled leader can develop communication techniques over time, but their moral compass ensures lasting influence.

In conclusion, although communication is a key asset for any leader, I believe that integrity is what defines truly great leadership, both in the eyes of the team and in the long-term impact of their actions.
